Billy Kirkwood, host of the Watch Bad Movies with Great Comedians Podcast, talks to GICF ahead of their LIVE SHOW!

Glasgow International Comedy Festival caught up with the one and only Billy Kirkwood, host of the Watch Bad Movies with Great Comedians Podcast, to ask him our burning questions ahead of their LIVE SHOW at the GFT on Tuesday 25th March 2025
1. First off, are you excited to be performing at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival?
Billy Kirkwood: “Yes, yes, YES…GOD YES. Imagine squirrels off their tits on red, flying about a bouncy castle……that’s what’s in my heart just now.”
2. Can you tell us a bit about your show?
Billy: “Watch Bad Movies with Great Comedians is a celebration of all movies and pop culture.
I literally get to do this show with comics I love and I love to hang around with Kate Hammer, Chris Thorburn, Rick Molland, Chris Scott.
Yes we watch “bad” movie clips, free style and have some fun but I don’t know any other show that has the connection between performer and audience like this bad boy does, with people opening up out their fandom and having just unrelenting fun. We all chat, laugh and watch together. It’s not about bad movies….it’s about loving what you love and not caring what folks thing. Come see the show, see some clips and stuff you’ll have missed and catch the buzz man.
3. What was the inspiration behind creating the show?
Billy: “It comes from those late-night movie chats you have with your mates over beer and Jaffa cakes.
Part improv, part lecture…. riffing over movies goes back decades but we wanted to give it a real twist but plugging in comedians and some of cinemas all time clangers.”
4. How has the show been received so far?
Billy: “People love the show, in the inbox is always full of movie suggestions or new clips and i tell no two are ever alike when it comes to taste. One person’s Cinematic stinker is another’s all-time great. And some…well just haven’t aged well.
I mean I KNOW Masters of the universe with Dolph Lungren as He-man isn’t good but I LOVE it. Then there’s troll 2…..ooft.”
5. When performing the show before, what was the best/nicest/craziest audience reaction to the show?
Billy: “The Glasgow crowd are the best, they get the jokes come on board for in jokes and in the moment stuff that can’t be replicated
One my fav times doing the show was over in the Netherlands with Chris Thorburn. We teamed up with a Dutch Movie Buff comic called Ruud Voss who brought us a bunch of “Bad” Dutch movies. To watch a Dutch crowd, get embarrassed, cringe and laugh at their own stuff the same way we do was so cool.”
6. What type of audience would you like to come and see you’re show?
Billy: “We get everyone, comedy fans, movie go-oers……I used the word Nerds with love and that’s what this show is…loving what you’re into in a safe space in having a laugh…we gotcha man.”
7. What would you like audiences to take away from it?
Billy: “Sheer joy of fandom. Bad movies, good movies and just having unapologetic fun. Be yourself dude”
8. What’s next for you after the Glasgow Comedy Festival?
Billy: “Next time I’ll be prepping more live shows for watch bad movie, gearing up for a new season of the podcast, before gearing up for my own solo show at the fringe, back at work on Mrs Browns boys, Radio and a few film bases surprises.”
